Foreign Relations Of Siam Thai

The foreign relations of Siam Thai are primarily handled and looked after by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand as well as Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country. Considering about the foreign relations of Thailand, the land fully takes part in international as well as regional organizations. It is one of the Major non-NATO allies of the United States. The independent country Siam Thai has increasingly developed close ties or relations with other ASEAN members including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, and Vietnam, whose foreign and economic ministers hold annual meetings.

As far as Regional Corporation of Thailand is concerned, it is developing in banking economic, trade and political as well as cultural matters. Thailand which was formally known as Siam Thai was the host of APEC 2003. At present, Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, who was already the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, is serving as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD). The land of Thailand was also present at the inaugural East Asia Summit in the year 2005. This shows the progressing nature of foreign relations of Siam Thai.

From the last few years, Siam Thai foreign relations are progressing, the country has also increased their role in international stage in recent years. When East Timor achieved independence from Indonesia, the country of Siam Thai for the first time also provides troops to the global peacekeeping effort. Till now the troops remain as part of UN peacekeeping force. As a part of improving foreign relations of Siam Thai, the land has also reached out organizations like Organization of American States and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Moreover, the country has also provided troops for reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan as well as Iraq.

Making an effort to improve foreign or international ties, Thaksin initiated negotiations for different free trade agreements with countries such as China, Auatralia, Bahrain, India and US. The country i.e. Thailand has also joined US-led invasion of Iraq; they send a 423-strong humanitarian contingent. It withdrew its troops on 10 September 2004. Two Thai soldiers died in Iraq in an insurgent attack. Thaksin announced that Thailand would forsake foreign aid, and work with donor countries to assist in the development of neighbors in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Thaksin was ambitious to position Thailand as a regional leader, initiating various development projects in poorer neighboring countries like Laos.
